Top 5 hits of 2011

Top 5 hits of 2011
2011 witnessed very less hits and has seen huge disasters. Here is the list of top 5 hits (straight films) of this year.

1)      Dookudu: This sensational movie is the biggest hit of the year and all time top 2 grosser. The makers of this film claim that it is the all time no. 1 grosser, but the fact is, it stays at 2 in the all time records list.

2)      Mr. Perfect: This wholesome family entertainer turned out to be the biggest hit in Prabhas career. This was the best film in 2011 summer.

3)      MirapakayaRaviteja has pulled off yet another hit with Mirapakaya, which was the best Pongal film in 2011. It is one of the best grosser in Raviteja’s career.

The Year in Computing

2011 saw the personal computer continue to be marginalized. Although PCs are still the workhorse computing device in homes and offices, the most exciting innovations over the last 12 months were centered on very small-scale computing, very large-scale computing, and networked combinations of the two.
Developments in small-scale computing, in the shape of consumer mobile hardware such as the iPad2 tablet or Galaxy Nexus smart phone, were naturally the most visible. Most of these lightweight devices use ARM-based chips, prompting Intel, best known for its desktop and laptop processors, to develop prototype smart phone and tablet devices that will almost certainly herald the arrival of new challengers to Apple's iPad and iPhone in 2012 and 2013.
The software that runs, and run on, these devices saw tremendous development activity as well. Hewlett-Packard tried (and failed) to break into the mobile market with an operating system, WebOS, that was generally judged to be better than the hardware it ran on. The jury is still out on whether Research in Motion can revive the flagging fortunes of the BlackBerry following the announcement of its new mobile OS. And there were major updates from the two heavyweights in the mobile OS world, Google and Apple, with Google releasing Android 4.0 (also known as "Ice Cream Sandwich") in September. With Android 4.0, tablet and smart-phone makers no longer have to run separate versions of Android, and the operating system also boasts features such as facial recognition. In October, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 4S, Apple released its iOS 5 operating system, featuring the Siri voice-activated digital assistant.
These new devices and operating systems have driven an explosion of mobile applications for areas such as electronic payments, health care, augmented reality, and games. The richness and range of these applications is causing a shift in corporate IT, with increasing numbers of companies allowing workers to bring their own devices to work.
But a lot of this mobile flexibility is possible only thanks to cloud computing, which lets devices seamlessly hand off complex tasks to data centers. The Kindle Fire is essentially just a front end to Amazon's cloud services, for example, and Apple's Siri won't work without a network connection.  Consequently, companies have been building a new generation of data centers, designed to handle cloud-computing loads as efficiently as possible. HP and Calxeda are pioneering the use in servers of low-power chips originally designed for battery-constrained mobile devices, in a bid to slash the massive electricity bills of data centers.
Tying cloud computing to consumer devices meant that a lot of personal (and corporate) information migrated into cyberspace this year, putting an even sharper emphasis on security and privacy issues. While some argue your data is better off in the cloud, researchers continue to worry about holes that can be exploited by criminals.

The Year in Materials

Tiny crystals called quantum dots emit intense, sharply defined colors. Now researchers have made LED displays that use quantum dots. Five years ago, QD Vision demonstratedits first, rudimentary one-color displays, using the nanoscale crystals. This year it demonstrated a full-color display capable of showing video. The company says it could be another five years before the technology appears in commercial displays. Samsung might get there first—it's also developing quantum-dot displays, and demonstrated a full-color onein February.
Quantum-dot displays could use far less energy than LCDs. Another ingenious way to reduce energy use is make displays that emit no light at all, but instead reflect ambient light, an approach being taken by Qualcomm with its full-color Mirasol displays, which use only a tenth of the energy of an LCD. The technology has started to appear in tablet computers in South Korea.
No display looks good after it's covered with fingerprints. A new coating based on soot from a candle flame could provide a cheap oil-repelling layer that could eliminate smudges.
Novel nanostructured materials could greatly enhance the power output of solar panels and make them cheaper by capturing light that would have otherwise been reflected. They could also achieve these goals by converting near infrared light into colors that conventional silicon solar cells can absorb. Another material could render stealth aircraft invisible at night—and invisible to radar night and day.
Metamaterials offer another approach to invisibility: instead of absorbing light, metamaterials bend it around an object. Until this year, researchers have only been able to make metamaterials on a small scale—less than a millimeter across. Now they've made them big enough to be practical. They don't work yet for all wavelengths of light, but they could render  objects invisible to night vision equipment.
Stanford researchers built a battery electrode that can be recharged 40,000 times—compared to the 1,000 charges you'd get with a typical laptop battery. Since the electrode lasts so long, and is made of abundant materials, it could provide an inexpensive way to store power from wind turbines and solar panels.
Other researchers have developed inexpensive materials that can store 10 times as much energy as conventional graphite electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. Paired with an equally high-capacity opposite electrode, these could transform portable electronics and electric vehicles. One technology in particular, from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, seems promising because it uses a conductive polymer that can be incorporated into existing manufacturing lines, instead of requiring the expensive new technology for making nanostructures required by others.
New tools could speed the next materials breakthroughs. A modeling program developed at Harvard has led to one of the best organic semiconductors ever made. And a robotic system for making thousands of battery cells with unique electrode chemistries has discovered materials that could boost lithium-ion battery storage capacity by 25 percent.

Kolaveri Di is Song of the Year: CNN

Kolaveri Di song: Kolaveri Di song has been recognized as ‘Song of the Year’ by CNN, USA. After becoming the blitzkrieg on the Internet and acquiring millions of hits, Dhanush’s Kolaveri di song has set yet another record. CNN has taken special note of this viral sensation and has christened Kolaveri di as the Top Song of the Year 2011. Kolaveri di song is currently ruling the roost on the Internet (YouTube) and has become and sensation of viral fever.

Kolaveri di, Kolaveri di song, why this Kolaveri di, why this Kolaveri di song, Kolaveri di song lyrics

The song and its Tamlish lyrics is now transcending geographical boundaries, and garnering worldwide acclamation as people groove to its unusual rhythm in pubs across the globe. Already, we witnessed several remixes into regional languages and also saw people using the song as a satirical gesture. Just imagine, the Kolaveri di song went to such great heights that its singer Dhanush was even invited as a special guest at visiting Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda’s dinner party. Now that’s quite an achievement!

Sonu Sood was Paid 80 Lakhs

Make hay while the sun shines! This is what exactly Bollywood actor Sonu Sood is doing.  Yuppie! The so called Tollywood baddie Sonu Sood has charged Rs. 80 lakhs for enacting in Allu Arjun’s movie directed by Trivikram Srnivas. Sources say that after Dookudu turning out to be a blockbuster, Sonu Sood has decided to hike his remuneration and pocket more from Tollywood. The last time Sonu Sood is was in the news for his remuneration was after ‘Arundhati’ release.

Sonu sood allu arjun, allu arjun sonu sood, Sonu sood trivikram, Sonu sood

Sonu Sood these days also become choosy as the chiselled actor turned down an offer in Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Gabbar Singh’. But there’s a reason since he played the same character in Dabangg and also in Tamil remake Oosthi. So with Allu Arjun’s movie being in the news as a ‘budget-slashed’ movie, producer Danayya has no choice but to pay 80 lakhs to Sonu Sood for an agreement of 50 days.

Dookudu is Better than Businessman

Although Mahesh Babu and Puri Jagannath completed ‘Businessman’ movie in record time, reports say that Prince Mahesh was not happy with the Businessman shooting schedules. For Dookudu, Mahesh Babu was given ample time between the shots and the shooting schedules were also relaxed and planned.

Mahesh Babu Businessman, puri jagannath businessman, Mahesh babu puri jagannath

However, for Businessman, the makers have erected a special set costing few crores, in Mumbai, and the cast eventually had to hurry to complete the shooting within the stipulated time. Now this is something that does not interest Mahesh. But RR Movie Makers, a prestigious banner, has this habit of announcing the release date at the time of movie launch. So Mahesh eventually was forced to cope with the time. This has made Mahesh feel that Dookudu shooting schedules were better than Businessman.

Device Tracks Blood Flow in the Brain

A headset ultrasound monitor could make it easier to detect the dangerous aftereffects of brain injuries.

A new ultrasound device could make it easier to detect a potentially life-threatening condition that is common in soldiers with blast-related brain injuries and patients who survive aneurysms.
The condition, called cerebral vasospasm, occurs when blood vessels suddenly constrict. The effect is like squeezing a garden hose: the velocity inside the artery builds as pressure grows, and less blood flows to the brain. The condition can develop several days after an initial injury, and is currently detected using ultrasound, which requires a trained technician to find the relevant blood vessels and hold the ultrasound beam in place.
PhysioSonics, based in Bellevue, Washington, has developed a monitor that makes this process automatic, eliminating the need for a technician. The company is adapting the product for military use, and hopes to expand it to also detect a potentially dangerous buildup of pressure inside the head.
The company's monitor consists of a headset that directs an array of ultrasound beams through the head and uses a proprietary algorithm to automatically detect the mid-cerebral artery, one of the major arteries supplying blood to the brain. The device then locks the relevant beam onto the artery and measures its blood flow. A machine attached to the headset gives an index of flow and peak velocity.
"The point is to give you a variable" that could be read similarly to a heart-rate monitor, says Michel Kliot, company cofounder and a neurosurgeon at University of Washington, where the technology was initially developed.
In November, the company received a military grant of $2.5 million to adapt the device for monitoring vasospasm in soldiers. Nearly half the soldiers who sustain blast injuries develop vasospasm, and the company plans to make a more rugged version of its commercial device for the battlefield.

New Camera Captures Light in Motion

Hollywood has to resort to trickery to show moviegoers laser beams traveling through the air. That's because the beams move too fast to be captured on film. Now a camera that records frames at a rate of 0.6 trillion every second can truly capture the bouncing path of a laser pulse.
See a video of a laser pulse moving through a Coke bottle, or bouncing off a tomato.
The system was developed by researchers led by Ramesh Raskar at MIT's Media Lab. Currently limited to a tabletop inside the group's lab, the camera can record what happens when very short pulses of laser light—lasting just 50 femtoseconds (50,000 trillionths of a second) long—hit objects in front of them. The camera captures the pulses bouncing between and reflecting off objects.
Raskar says the new camera could be used for novel kinds of medical imaging, tracking light inside body tissue. It could also enable novel kinds of photographic manipulation. In experiments, the camera has captured frames roughly 500 by 600 pixels in size.
The fastest scientific cameras on the market typically capture images at rates in the low millions of frames per second. They work similar to the way a consumer digital camera works, with a light sensor that converts light from the lens into a digital signal that's saved to disk.
The Media Lab researchers had to take a different approach, says Andreas Velten, a member of the research team. An electronic system's reaction time is inherently limited to roughly 500 picoseconds, he says, because it takes too long for electronic signals to travelalong the wires and through the chips in such designs. "[Our shutter speed is] just under two picoseconds because we detect light with a streak camera, which gets around the electrical problem."
More typically used to measure the timing of laser pulses than for photography, a streak camera doesn't need any electronics to record light. Light entering the streak camera falls onto a specialized electrode—a photocathode—that converts the stream of photons into a matching stream of electrons. That electron beam hits a screen on the back of the streak camera that's covered with chemicals that light up wherever the beam falls. The same mechanism is at work in a traditional cathode ray tube TV set.

Should We Fire the First Shot in a Cyberwar?

    Credit: Technology Review

Military bureaucracies around the world are likely to see offensive capabilities as increasingly attractive in any cyberwar, suggests the head of the computer research arm of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Offensive cybertechnology and operations are inherently stronger than defensive operations—that is, offense beats defense in cyberspace, in most cases, and given enough time," says Herbert Lin, chief scientist at the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board at the National Research Council. Lin spoke last week at an MIT workshop on the fast-emerging cyber dimension to international relations.
Cyberattacks could damage or disable military networks or civilian infrastructure like power grids, or they could involve the theft of military and corporate secrets. Experts warn that such attacks could occur at light speed and be difficult to trace, especially if data is routed through computers in many different countries.
"Since you don't know how to do good defense, you can't prevent offensive dominance. And you can't do good deterrence because effective retaliation is hard, so if you want to take advantage of cyberspace, you will do offensive operations for nondefensive purposes," Lin says. "I'd really like to be wrong about that, but I fear that's where we are going."
Lin contributed to a 2009 National Academies report which argued that the situation calls for talks with other nations to establish the rules of the road, open debate in Congress on U.S. strategy, and the development of better tools to detect and measure threats. A later report described the tricky landscape of deterrence.
Last month, General Keith Alexander, head of the National Security Agency and the U.S. Cyber Command, said the U.S. military needs better capabilities to not only defend against cyberattacks, but also to potentially launch them. Speaking at the U.S. Strategic Command's Cyber and Space Symposium in Omaha, Nebraska, he told an audience of 1,500 military and defense contracting officials that the U.S. military should have the power to attack other countries in cyberspace. "We can't just defend," Alexander said.

Seven Ways to Get Yourself Hacked

    Credit: Pedro Miguel Sousa

In recent months, I've met at least three people who have been the victim of hackers who've taken over their Gmail accounts and sent out e-mails to everyone in the addressbook.
The e-mails, which appear legitimate, claim that the person has been robbed while traveling and begs that money be wired so that the person can get home. What makes the scam even more effective is that it tends to happen to people who are actually traveling abroad—making it more likely that friends and families will be duped.
Although it's widely believed that a strong password is one of the best defenses against online fraud, hackers increasingly employ highly effective ways for compromising accounts that do not require guessing passwords.
This means that it is more important than ever to practice "defensive computing"—and to have a plan in place for what to do if your account is compromised.
Malware. Sometimes called the "advanced persistent threat," a broad range of software that was programmed with evil intent is running on tens of millions of computers throughout the world.
These programs can capture usernames and passwords as you type them, send the data to remote websites, and even open up a "proxy" so that attackers can type commands into a Web browser running on your very computer. This makes today's state-of-the-art security measures—like strong passwords and key fobs—more or less useless, since the bad guys type their commands on your computer after you've authenticated.
Today, the primary defense against malware is antivirus software, but increasingly, the best malware doesn't get caught for days, weeks, or even months after it's been released into the wild. Because antivirus software is failing, many organizations now recommend antediluvian security precautions, such as not clicking on links and not opening files you receive by e-mail unless you know that the mail is legitimate. Unfortunately, there is no tool for assessing legitimacy.
Windows XP. According to the website w3schools, roughly 33 percent of the computers browsing the Internet are running Windows XP. That's a problem, because unlike Windows 7, XP is uniquely susceptible to many of today's most pernicious malware threats. Windows 7, and especially Windows 7 running on 64-bit computers, has security features built in to the operating system such as address space randomization and a non-executable data area. These protections will never be added to Windows XP. Thus, as a general rule, you should not use Windows XP on a computer that's connected to the Internet. Tell that to the 33 percent.
Kiosk computers. You should avoid using public computers at hotels, airports, libraries, and "business centers" to access webmail accounts, because there is simply no way to tell if these computers are infected with malware or not. And many of them are running Windows XP. So avoid them.

Hansika Turns Gangster in Vettai Mannan

Hottie Hansika Motwani is all geared to woo the Kollywood audience in a gangster role.  It’s been reported that bubbly actress Hansika will be essaying the role of a gangster for her upcoming movie titled Vettai Mannan. The flick which also stars Simbu, Jai and Deeksha Seth, is an action thriller written and directed by debutant director Nelson. Vettai Mannan is produced by S. S. Chakravarthy and features background score and soundtrack composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. This is a contrasting role to Hansika’s previous super hit Tamil movie Velayudham, in which she played a village lassie.

After playing some romantic girl and other characters Hansika has finally decided to try out new characters. Also, Hansika is also enacting in M Rajesh’s OKOK co-starring Udaynidhi Stalin and is busy shooting non-stop for Tamil movies. While Hansika is on a signing spree in Kollywood, her Tollywood career in not equally bright. In fact, in her last two Telugu movies Kandireega and Oh My Friend Hansika is being criticized for putting lot of weight. Wonder how offers are raining in Kollywood for the busty actress.

Thaman Starts Composing for NTR Film

SS Thaman is arguably the busiest music director these days in Tollywood. Apart from his current set of Tamil movies, he’s also scoring the music for NTR starrer movie, directed by Seenu Vaitla. And this is the second time Thaman is working with NTR after Brindavanam and with Sreenu Vaitla Dookudu. Brindavanam was a runaway hit and Thaman’s music was one of the highlights. Similarly, Dookudu is an all-time record movie and Thaman was a huge asset in terms of music. Freshly, this talented music director has started composing tunes for this NTR movie, and like always, amid huge expectations.

The actress has freshly landed in a controversy for apparently choosing to walk out from Bellamkonda Suresh’s upcoming movie directed by Nandi Reddy (Ala Modalaindi fame). Samantha is supposed to be paired up with Siddharth and the actress has reportedly taken an advance for the movie. However, her dates have clashed with that of Venky - Mahesh's SVSC and Samantha could not accommodate her dates to the latter. Producer Bellamkonda Suresh has complained in this connection and took this matter to the Producers Council & also MAA to resolve the matter.

    Panjaa Title Song Placement Changed

Perhaps too late! After receiving a lot of criticism on the placement of the title song of Pawan Kalyan starrer Panjaa, the makers have finally decided to change the song positioning. The title song (Nee Chura Chura Chupule Panja) was earlier coming after the end-title credits much to the fans disappointment since that was a super hit number. However, director Vishnuvardhan said that they wanted this song to be only a theme song (album) and use it in the background score. But the growing pressure has made the makers to shift the song placement.

Freshly, the Panjaa title track is being placed after the first fight and will repeat after the climax (end credits) too. The edited, new prints of Panjaa are sent to theatres and fans can now enjoy this track twice in the movie with different visuals. Mind you, the makers never shot a video on this and it was only after the response they got for the track, they hurried on to shoot a video. And with the time running out, they could not decide on the placement and as such left it towards the end.
